Webinar on Agritech and women: what AI strategies can promote greater inclusion?

The Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN) is organising a webinar this Wednesday, 10 September, from 10.30 am to 12 noon on Zoom.

Under the theme «Agritech and women: what AI approaches can promote greater inclusion?», this virtual discussion aims to collectively reflect on the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating gender considerations into digital and AI-based innovations in agriculture.

It will provide an opportunity to present real-life examples, analyse the specific barriers faced by women and explore inclusive strategies, whilst also serving as a forum for dialogue and networking between researchers, farmers, gender experts and policy-makers.

Chaired by Dr Marame Cissé, a gender expert at IPAR, the virtual event will bring together:

Mutiat Olaitan MOHAMMED, Lecturer at Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria. An expert in microbiology, nanobiotechnology, teaching and research, she is currently acting coordinator of the Research and Innovation Unit at the same university. She is in charge of the «AI for Women in Aquaculture» (AI4WA) project, which forms part of the first phase of the GRAIN Project (Further details on this can be found via this link: https://grain-africa.org/en/ia-for-women-in-aquaculture-ai4wa-2/

Joel Nwaeze Nwakaire: Lecturer in Agricultural Technology and Renewable Energy Engineering at the Department of Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also a Senior Associate Researcher at the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), Nairobi, Kenya.

Daouda SECK is an agricultural engineer and value chain expert. He has over five years’ experience in promoting innovation at the intersection of technology, policy and rural transformation. As a United Nations Young Leader for Global Food Systems, he champions the voices of young change-makers in the development of resilient and inclusive agri-food systems.

Aboubakry Wade is a qualified IT manager with over 10 years’ experience in France. He is the founder of Salsabile Farm, a start-up operating in the agricultural sector which runs a 2-hectare orchard in Nguekhokh in the Thiès region (Senegal).

By the end of this webinar, participants should have a better understanding of the issues surrounding gender inclusion in AI-based innovations in the agricultural sector; the main challenges and strategies to be implemented have been identified. The recommendations will inform the development of the GEDI framework.

As a reminder, GRAIN is run by a consortium of three African institutions (Ipar in Senegal, Sunbird in Uganda and CSEA in Nigeria) and funded by the IDRC.

The project aims to promote responsible and inclusive AI innovations designed to empower women and marginalised communities in sub-Saharan Africa.
