White paper and roadmap on AI from the African Union Development Agency
The AUDA-NEPAD white paper and roadmap on AI, which were developed with support from IDRC, are launching a call for proposals to develop a pan-African strategy for AI. The white paper highlights the potential of AI to empower Africans to solve their own development challenges, whilst acknowledging the risks associated with AI and the limitations of infrastructure on the continent. As such, the document outlines policy options that can promote the responsible adoption and innovation of AI whilst mitigating its risks.
The white paper, available for review here, addresses issues such as human capital, infrastructure and data, AI regulation and safety, the economics of AI, the creation of sustainable partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation. The strategy aims to coordinate a comprehensive approach and serve as a policy model for African countries that need support in developing their own approaches.
Over the coming months, AUDA-NEPAD will gather feedback, input and advice from policy-makers, funding bodies, major technology companies, universities and others through email surveys, workshops and interviews.
In a LinkedIn post, Barbara Glover, an IDRC research partner and programme manager at AUDA-NEPAD, said: «Feedback is invaluable, as we aim to produce a document that not only reflects the current state of AI on our continent, but also anticipates future developments and needs.»
IDRC is delighted to continue supporting AUDA-NEPAD’s work in this area.
