Project summary
The research entitled “ Mainstreaming gender in AI: a perspective from French- and English-speaking East Africa ” aims to explore gender inclusion in AI across the countries identified within the East African community, namely English-speaking East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda) and French-speaking East Africa (Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC). The research project will examine power within the AI ecosystem from a gender perspective, investigate the barriers to the creation and use of sex-disaggregated data for AI, gender gaps and biases in AI, and will explore how power in this context can be challenged by examining existing systems and the use of AI in both English-speaking and French-speaking East Africa.
