GRAIN is launching a survey on the extent to which gender mainstreaming is practised in organisations heavily involved in artificial intelligence in sub-Saharan Africa

The GRAIN (Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network) project is launching a survey to assess the extent to which gender mainstreaming is practised in organisations heavily involved in artificial intelligence in sub-Saharan Africa.

The survey represents a crucial step in identifying current practices, highlighting existing gaps and identifying opportunities for improvement to ensure that AI is developed and used in an ethical and equitable manner.

The GRAIN project is therefore committed to exploring how AI-related organisations integrate gender perspectives into their practices, policies and technological developments.

The aim is to identify current strengths and weaknesses in gender mainstreaming in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and to strengthen equity and accountability in the use of AI, whilst assessing the extent to which gender perspectives are included and integrated in this field.

More specifically, it examines in detail the distribution of women involved in artificial intelligence-related activities and analyses this involvement at both the strategic and technical levels.

It also examines the reasons why women choose a career in artificial intelligence by exploring the factors that motivate them.

Furthermore, the survey accurately identifies the barriers that prevent women from participating fully in artificial intelligence. It highlights the barriers and challenges in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as potential solutions for overcoming them.

To achieve the survey’s objectives, the necessary information will be gathered from AI stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa. Participants therefore include all institutions involved or active in the field of AI, covering areas such as governance, funding, research, the development of solutions, training, use and promotion.
