The Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN) is organising a webinar focusing on « Artificial intelligence for productive and sustainable agriculture: incorporating gender perspectives and strengthening the role of women ». Indeed, as agriculture is one of the key sectors for the region’s economic development, the application of AI in this field offers significant opportunities to improve productivity, sustainability and social inclusion.
However, gender issues relating to the use of AI in agriculture remain largely unexplored. It is crucial to understand how AI innovations can be used to reduce gender inequalities and strengthen the role of women in the agricultural sector.
The aim of this online event is to raise awareness and inform stakeholders about the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of AI in agriculture, with a focus on the impact of these technologies on gender equality.
Specifically, the aim will be to present concrete examples of AI applications in agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, to disseminate the findings of the GRAIN project through the network’s funded projects in this field, to discuss the specific challenges faced by women in accessing and using AI technologies in agriculture; to explore strategies and solutions for integrating gender issues into agricultural AI projects; and, above all, to promote networking and the sharing of experiences amongst stakeholders in the field, including researchers, farmers, gender experts and policy-makers.

Dr Angella Ndaka who specialises in sociology and gender studies at the University of Otago in New Zealand, where her research has focused on sustainable techno-futures in artificial intelligence (AI). She is also the lead researcher on the project entitled «Digitalisation for Mama Mboga: Is the engagement and inclusion of women in agri-tech AI important? Dr Olayinka Jelili Yusuf specialising in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural technology transfer, gender and rural development. Mr Yusuf is currently an associate professor at Kwara State University and research director of the Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (AI4SARD) research network. He leads the «AI for women in agriculture – AI4WIA» project.» Find out more

Dr Abdou Kader Touré who is an expert in Artificial Intelligence and a technical adviser on data economics at GIZ in Senegal
This webinar is expected to provide a better understanding of the current and potential applications of AI in agriculture, to identify the main barriers to the inclusion of women in agricultural AI initiatives, to develop recommendations for promoting an inclusive use of AI in the agricultural sector, and to forge new connections between participants, fostering future collaborations on the themes of AI, agriculture and gender.
The webinar is aimed at a wide range of participants, including researchers and academics specialising in AI and agriculture, experts in gender and inclusive development, stakeholders in the agricultural sector (co-operatives, farmers, agri-food businesses), policy-makers and government representatives, non-governmental organisations and international bodies involved in agricultural and technological development.
This webinar forms part of the GRAIN project’s ongoing efforts to promote the responsible and inclusive use of artificial intelligence in sub-Saharan Africa. It will provide a platform for constructive dialogue and the exchange of ideas that will help shape the future of agriculture in Africa, whilst promoting gender equality.
