Expert panel on artificial intelligence as a driver of development in Africa

On Monday 15 May 2023, IPAR took part in an “expert panel on artificial intelligence as a driver of development in Africa” in Saly.

Organised by UNICEF, the aim of this panel discussion was to explore in greater depth the research and progress made in the use of new technologies in the region, and how these can be harnessed to drive sustainable and inclusive development in Africa.

IPAR, represented by Ms Seynabou Sall, a data expert and project manager, and Ms Tabara Korka Ndiaye, a research assistant on the GRAIN (Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network), gave a presentation on “responsible AI and its responsible use to ensure that it does not widen the gender gap or the digital divide, but rather becomes a tool for inclusion in Africa”.

IPAR’s contribution also addressed issues of governance and advocacy for policies and regulations, areas in which UNICEF and development stakeholders could play a part to ensure that the rights of African children are taken into account in the field of digital and emerging technologies.

The issue of the importance of partnerships with research institutes (such as IPAR) in promoting research and innovation on child protection issues was also raised.
