The Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN) has partnered with DIPPER Lab as part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) programme to develop a Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) framework for the Smart Indigenous Weather App (SIWA).
This collaboration, funded through EmpowerHerAI – Advancing Gender Equality and Responsible AI in Sub-Saharan Africa via GRAIN – will be implemented through the ObaaSIWA project, a gender-focused initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of female farmers within the SIWA study area to make accurate short-term rainfall predictions by integrating indigenous weather forecasting methods.
The project aims to empower women as key players in climate resilience by improving access to hyper-local, accessible and culturally relevant weather information, thereby enhancing agricultural decision-making amongst female farmers.
As part of the initiative, a GEDI framework will be developed to guide the inclusive design and use of SIWA, ensuring that gender and social inclusion considerations are embedded throughout the application.
The project is led by Prof. Eric Tutu Tchao, Scientific Director of DIPPER Lab. The team also includes Dr Andrews Selasi Agbemenu, Deputy Scientific Director; Mrs Elikplim Abui Tamaklo, Gender Officer at DIPPER Lab; Christiana Selorm Aggor, Administrator; Dr Enoch Bessah, Climate and Ecosystems Service Monitoring Specialist; and Dr Prince Odame.
This collaboration forms part of wider efforts under the AI4D programme to apply responsible artificial intelligence to development challenges, particularly in agriculture and climate adaptation.
