Implementation of the DUA project in Côte d’Ivoire: A mission deployed by IPAR to provide training for enumerators

IPAR is continuing to implement the DUA project in the pilot countries. Following Senegal, Burkina Faso (CEDRES) and Benin (ACED), IPAR, in collaboration with CIRES (Ivorian Centre for Economic and Social Research), is organising a training workshop for enumerators from 21 to 24 June for the study on the level of development of artificial intelligence in Côte d’Ivoire.

The overall aim of this workshop is to train investigators in the use of tools for collecting data from current and potential stakeholders in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Côte d’Ivoire.

Specifically, this involves, amongst other things, presenting the methodological aspects of the DUA survey (objectives, target populations, data collection strategy, etc.), to discuss the questionnaire in detail with data collectors to ensure a thorough understanding of the survey’s methodological aspects and data collection strategy, and to gather feedback to improve the data collection tools (questionnaire and data collection applications). Finally, this workshop provides an opportunity to pre-validate the mapping of current and potential AI stakeholders in Côte d’Ivoire.

As a reminder, the DUA project aims to generate knowledge on the political, legal, institutional and ethical frameworks relating to AI in French-speaking African countries, with a view to informing policies and strategies for responsible AI. It therefore seeks to answer the following questions:

  • How do current political, legal, institutional and ethical frameworks address the emergence of new technologies such as AI? What shortcomings have been identified? How can these frameworks be modernised to ensure responsible AI?
  • What is the current level of AI adoption? In which sectors and fields? What are the existing technical capabilities and training needs?
  • What are the requirements for establishing an inclusive and sustainable framework, particularly with regard to inclusion and/or gender equality, to ensure the responsible promotion and use of artificial intelligence?

Indeed, answering these questions requires carrying out a number of activities, including surveys of current stakeholders (active in AI) and potential stakeholders (not yet active in AI) within the digital economy ecosystem in the project’s target area.

The training of investigators is provided by Mr Cheikh Faye, a statistical engineer and DUA project coordinator, and Ms Ndeye Fatou Mboup, a Big Data expert and research assistant at IPAR, in collaboration with the CIRES team, represented by Dr Bouaffon, Director of Research, and Dr Boyé, a researcher at CIRES.
