Gender disparities in STEM programmes in Kenya: the case of Dedan Kimathi University of Technology

The study "Gender Disparity in STEM Programs in Kenya: Case of Dedan Kimathi University of Technology", presented at the IST-Africa 2024 conference, highlights the persistent gender imbalance in science and technology in Kenya.

Carried out by a team of researchers from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), the analysis of data from 2019 to 2023 shows that the average proportion of women enrolled in STEM subjects remains below 30%, with a marked drop in 2023. Engineering programmes show the greatest disparity, while science and mathematics courses show a small but steady increase.

The authors recommend the introduction of mentoring programmes for female students, awareness-raising campaigns on gender stereotypes, and a review of education policies to strengthen inclusiveness.

This research contributes to the global debate on promoting gender equality in scientific and technological careers, which is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
