Rebecca Ryakitimbo from Tanzania, a beneficiary of the first phase of the Grain project, is among the 40 Top AI Achievers in Africa. She ranks 24th in the Continental Champions category, which recognises leaders whose exceptional contributions are shaping the development of artificial intelligence and supporting business development and the promotion of AI adoption across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ranking, which highlights the forty Africans under the age of forty who have had a remarkable and transformative impact in the field of AI, is based on a rigorous assessment. The judging panel considered several criteria, such as the candidates\u2019 influence on global discourse surrounding AI, their role in the development of policies and governance frameworks, their capacity for technological innovation, the scope of their leadership within major institutions, the breadth of their work, their contributions to advancing research, their publications in recognised journals, and the international awards they have received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rankings also include other honorary categories, including the \u2018International Pioneer\u2019 category, which recognises individuals who are building bridges between continents and whose innovations are recognised internationally. The \u2018Solid Contributors\u2019 category honours professionals whose consistent contributions form one of the cornerstones of AI development in Africa. Finally, the \u2018Rising Stars\u2019 category recognises emerging leaders whose growing influence heralds the next generation of excellence in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Grain project, Rebecca Ryakitimbo led the initiative entitled \u00abIntegrating a gender perspective into AI: a perspective from French- and English-speaking East Africa\u00bb. This project explored how gender is taken into account in AI systems in several countries in the region, including Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda for English-speaking East Africa, as well as Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC for French-speaking East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A technician, writer, researcher and nature enthusiast, Rebecca Ryakitimbo dedicates her work to harnessing technological solutions to address the challenges faced by communities, particularly through her involvement in digital policy.<\/p>\n
