This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day marks the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the telegraph to radio, from the internet to artificial intelligence, technology has transformed the way we live, work and communicate. But its benefits remain deeply unequal. This year\u2019s focus on gender equality in the digital transformation is both timely and urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All over the world, algorithmic biases reinforce long-standing prejudices. Online harassment and abuse silence women\u2019s voices and drive them away from the internet. Furthermore, women and girls remain significantly under-represented in the fields that shape our future: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This injustice harms us all. We cannot accept a digital future that leaves half of humanity behind. We must urgently invest in digital skills for all; harness the potential of technology to improve women\u2019s lives; remove the barriers that prevent their full participation and leadership in the technology sector; and continue our efforts to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms, both online and offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact offer a way forward to bridge all digital divides and strengthen collaboration in support of women\u2019s rights online. Let us take this path together and help ensure that digital transformation becomes a driving force for progress, inclusion and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When technology is there to benefit everyone, everyone stands to gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
