{"id":18859,"date":"2023-08-07T18:57:08","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T16:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grain-africa.org\/?p=18859"},"modified":"2023-08-07T18:57:08","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T16:57:08","slug":"nine-projects-have-been-selected-following-the-call-for-proposals-on-improving-gender-inclusion-and-gender-equality-through-the-lia-in-sub-saharan-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grain-africa.org\/en\/neuf-9-projets-selectionnes-suite-a-lappel-a-propositions-sur-lamelioration-de-linclusion-et-de-legalite-des-sexes-grace-a-lia-en-afrique-subsah\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine (9) projects selected following the call for proposals on \u201cenhancing inclusion and gender equality through AI in sub-Saharan Africa\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the a<a href=\"https:\/\/grain-africa.org\/en\/call-for-proposals\/\">Call for proposals \u2013 GRAIN<\/a> Under the call for proposals on \u201cImproving inclusion and gender equality through Artificial Intelligence in sub-Saharan Africa\u201d, launched by GRAIN, nine (9) projects were selected from around fifty applications received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These projects were proposed by teams led by six women and three men from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya (2), South Africa, Nigeria (2) and Ethiopia (2). The beneficiaries come from six universities, a public-interest research consortium, an NGO and a non-profit organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The selected projects cover the following topics:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gender and speech technology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Epistemic justice; diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI); studies in science, technology and society (STS); and public policy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research into economic development, economic regulation, gender and public policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research into artificial intelligence (AI) and digital justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artificial intelligence and precision farming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agricultural technology transfer, gender and rural development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Artificial intelligence, computer vision, natural language processing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Natural Language Processing (NLP), Big Data Analysis, Human Data Mining<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The teams are from the following organisations:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Makerere University (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mak.ac.ug\/\">https:\/\/www.mak.ac.ug\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Core23lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/core23lab.org\/\">https:\/\/core23lab.org\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centre for African Epistemic Justice (<a href=\"https:\/\/epistemic-justice.org\/\">https:\/\/epistemic-justice.org\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data Economy Policy Hub (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataeconomypolicyhub.org\/\">https:\/\/www.dataeconomypolicyhub.org\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summit University (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.summituniversity.edu.ng\/home.php\">https:\/\/www.summituniversity.edu.ng\/home.php<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dkut.ac.ke\/\">https:\/\/www.dkut.ac.ke\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kwara State University ( <a href=\"https:\/\/mykwasu.kwasu.edu.ng\/\">https:\/\/mykwasu.kwasu.edu.ng\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>American College of Technology (ACT) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.actamericancollege.com\/\">https:\/\/www.actamericancollege.com\/<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debre Markos University (http:\/\/www.dmu.edu.et\/)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This call for proposals, launched in October 2022, invited submissions of projects addressing the use of AI to tackle issues relating to gender inclusion and equity in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selected teams will join the GRAIN (Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network) network in Africa, a network of individual researchers, research and advocacy organisations, social innovators and think tanks. The GRAIN network is led and facilitated by a consortium of strong and innovative research institutions comprising IPAR (Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale), CSEA (Centre d\u2019Etude des \u00c9conomies d\u2019Afrique) and Sunbird AI. The Network for Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (GRAIN) is a research network focusing on artificial intelligence for gender equality and inclusion.
