The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has published a white paper and roadmap for the development of artificial intelligence (AI), launching a coordinated effort for a continent-wide approach to AI technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AUDA-NEPAD AI White Paper and Roadmap, which was developed with the support of IDRC, calls for proposals to develop a pan-African strategy for AI. The white paper highlights the potential of AI to empower Africans to solve their own development challenges while recognising the risks associated with AI and the infrastructure limitations on the continent. As such, the paper outlines policy options that can promote the responsible adoption and innovation of AI while mitigating its risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white paper, available for review here, addresses issues such as human capital, infrastructure and data, AI regulation and security, the economics of AI, building sustainable partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation. The strategy aims to coordinate a comprehensive approach and serve as a policy model for African countries that need support to develop their own approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the coming months, AUDA-NEPAD will be gathering feedback, input and advice from policy makers, grant makers, major technology companies, universities and others through email surveys, workshops and interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on LinkedIn, Barbara Glover, IDRC research partner and AUDA-NEPAD programme manager, said, \"The feedback is invaluable, as we aim to create a document that not only reflects the current state of AI on our continent, but also anticipates future developments and needs.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IDRC looks forward to continuing to support AUDA-NEPAD's work in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
